Allapattah residents know what's best for our community!

On June 20th, 150+ residents came together for the Allapattah People’s Assembly, to discuss the changes and challenges people face as a community, how it's impacting families, and what collective actions can be taken toward solutions led by those most impacted.

In the room were working parents, seniors and students, educators, and care providers – everyday people of different backgrounds united behind a shared vision of what they want to see for their families and neighborhood: safe and permanently affordable housing, quality childcare, access to healthcare, lower utility bills, and local community programs that support the whole family.

Residents got to meet 10+ local organizations through our Resource Fair and learn about what resources and programs exist to support the wellbeing of the community, including local food pantries, legal aid, eviction diversion, youth development programs, and so much more. We appreciate every organization who made the Resource Fair possible!

Tired of empty promises from politicians and a corrupt system that protects private profit over public life, Allapattah residents deserve to be in the drivers’ seat when it comes to redevelopment in their neighborhood. They want every one of their neighbors to feel safe and live with dignity, regardless of their status or income level. We heard from residents who want to see their elected officials use their political influence to put working families first, not wealthy developers and corporate lobbyists.

In small groups, neighbors got together and talked through what opportunities exist to organize and bring this vision into reality. Each person left with clear next steps and the phone number of at least two people who are willing to take action with them. People power is being built in Allapattah, by and for those who live and work here.
